1997: Foo Fighters - Everlong

(You did it again; I was already going to queue up the 8-bit cover of this. Get out of my head dude.)

Despite - and because of - how much I was into Nirvana, the Foo Fighters made me a bit uncomfortable for the longest time. I just couldn’t get into them right away (and I wanted to, I did), I think it was too depressing. I mean it was, at first. And it never made any sense to me.

I remember feeling almost betrayed (but why?) when my friend’s cool neighbour got on the school bus less than a year after our generation’s own rock-9/11 with the Foo Fighters album cover on his t-shirt [James Franco steez cool, and he was in a band, therefore legit cred].

After exchanging the ol’ half-smirk/half-headnod of acknowledgement (social law between members of the same categorical tribe - mandatory if opposite member is of the preferred mating gender) but before him slinking into the seat across from me to gaze all cool-like out the school bus window, I had this weird one-two punch of emotion. Punch 1. Hey, remember that time our favourite tiny troubled rockerdude checked out for good?  Punch 2. My failure to support our brother David of Grohl in our time of rock mourning. I’m an embarrassment to my tribe. I should just commit grunge hari-kari but I have this pesky flannel shirt belt of honor in the way.

I don’t know if that is strange or if it totally makes sense. #postkurtwave was tough times.
