Genesis of an inside joke

This is a poster graciously signed by Leigh Ellis of The Basketball Jones as Kyle Singler. This whole joke that Singler is my favorite player started in the preseason when those ridiculous draft photos of Singler emerged, and we made fun of them. Then, during the Pistons’ opening night, Dan and I kept making jokes about the future of the franchise and we jokingly/sadly decided Kyle Singler was it. Then, Kyle Singler started putting up numbers and he actually became a Pistons franchise favorite. We got these “Buckets” posters at a 70s theme night this year. “YEAH KIM YEAH,” which is what is written by Leigh-as-Kyle, is a different joke, actually attributed to a lady in the Barclays Center yelling “YEAH KRIS YEAH” at Kris Humphries in earshot of Erin

ANYWAY, this is by far one of the kindest, inside-jokiest birthday gifts I’ve ever received. Plus, I have to explain the jokes and gifts to my friends who don’t listen to TBJ, so it’s like the gift that keeps giving me a gift.

It’s a callback joke that keeps recursively calling more callback jokes! And you’re totally welcome! It was just as fun to make as it was to give.

I gave the Shonsta-phine a few pushes on the skateboard last night. She loved it! She kept asking for more. She had some natural balance, kept her knees bent and arms out.

I think there’s a market for skateboard helmets with a pacifier on the chinstrap.

Thinking about resistance to learning new tools

Many users are incredibly resistant to changing tools, even if mastering the new tool would greatly increase their quality of life. What I have also observed is that people compartmentalize their interest in trying new tools. Someone might resist upgrading Microsoft Office but constantly seek out the newest fishing tackle available. Or a designer might eagerly upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop but refuse to learn a few Unix shell commands that would make their life much easier.

First try braising short ribs turned out really well. Room for improvement, but very easy and tasty for a Tuesday night.
